Tips to determine when it’s time to change your mattress.

The primary rule used in the mattress industry is that you should replace your mattress every eight years, but there are certain things to look out for that may mean you need to replace your mattress sooner, this quick guide will hopefully give you some key information.

There are a few key questions that you need to ask yourself when debating if it’s time to change your mattress;

If Not Now When

How do you wake up?

  • Do you feel rested?
  • Do you have aches and pains?
  • Do you feel energised?

If you don’t feel rested, energised, or wake with aches and pains, this can certainly point to your mattress needing to be changed, the fillings change over a prolonged period and will not provide as much support as they did when you first slept on it, this can mean your back, hips, shoulders and knees, the main pressure points in the body are not getting the support they need, which can result in waking with aches and pains.

Is your mattress the same shape as when you bought it?

  • Does it dip in the middle?
  • Does it sag at the sides?
  • Have the tufts come out?

One of the biggest signs of needing a new mattress is if its original shape can no longer be seen, over time, it’s likely the mattress will develop dips in the sleeping areas with prolonged use, this can take longer to appear the more you rotate and turn your mattress, but even over time, this will eventually become the case, sleeping in those dipped areas will provide less support again contributing to a disappointing night’s sleep.

Some mattresses are tufted, these are used to keep fillings secured and in place, on very rare occasions, these can become loose, or simply fall off the mattress, this can cause fillings to move position which affects the overall comfort of the mattress.

Final words of wisdom!

Factoring in the above facts about mattress shape and comfort and just how that can negatively impact your sleep, one final thing to take into consideration, is a mattress greater than eight years old is going to house close to a decades worth of allergens, dust mites and skin cells, if any of the above statements sounds like your current mattress, then it could be time to make some changes towards achieving sleeping bliss!
