Can The Sound Of Waves Really Help You Sleep?

Just how can the sound of crashing waves influence your sleep?

Known for its calming effects, the sounds of the ocean can transport our mind to a happy memory, or maybe even an imaginary “happy place” to help us drift off into a deep sleep.

The soothing sounds can transport us to a relaxed state which in turn promotes a more well rounded night’s sleep.

Wave sounds can be used to simply drown out noise pollutants around you such as outside traffic, noisy neighbours or just general household noise, creaks of pipes, squeaks of floorboards, any noise that can keep our brains on high alert.

Not only can these sounds send us into sleeping bliss, our new found relaxed state has also shown results of reducing our heart rate and reducing anxiety levels which again promote a better night’s sleep, so there is nothing to lose by giving this trend a try!

Another way to use ocean sounds is to play them during a relaxing activity just prior to going to sleep, a prime example of this is to play the ocean sounds whilst reading, this combines two soothing tasks into one little ball of relaxation.

The rhythmic sounds of the waves have also been shown to positively impact our parasympathetic nervous system which is primarily known for the “fight or flight” reflex, this system then stores energy to be used to regulate other body functions, any positive changes to this system will have increase your relaxation levels to allow for a calming night.

Using these sounds for a prolonged period of time will ultimately aim to improve your sleep which in turn has a positive effect on your mental health, with a chance of reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression & stress, it is by no means a fix to life’s problems, but ending the night with a relaxing routine can certainly prove to go a long way.
